Why Our Team is Passionate About Obedience Training

Living with a dog that shows aggressive tendencies can be stressful for both the dog and the family. We understand this challenge because we’ve dedicated our careers to improving the well‑being of dogs. Natural Breed Kennels was founded out of a deep love for dogs and a commitment to their health and happiness. Our founder, Shellie O’Day, created the kennel to raise the standard for ethical breeding and to provide a safe, loving space where dogs can thrive. Today, our mission extends beyond breeding—we run a cage‑free resort, offer daycare and grooming, and, most importantly for aggressive dogs, provide comprehensive training programs in Charlotte and Midland, North Carolina.

We believe training is an ongoing journey. Dogs crave structure, and obedience training creates a language you both understand. Unwanted behaviors often stem from confusion or fear. By teaching clear commands and reinforcing positive actions, we can turn negative behaviors into healthy habits. Aggression isn’t a personality trait—it’s a behavior that can be redirected through patience, structure and positive reinforcement. Our team lives and breathes canine care, and we’ve designed our programs to help dogs of all ages and temperaments become confident, well‑mannered companions.

Understanding Aggressive Behaviors

Before diving into training techniques, it’s important to recognize what aggression looks like. Aggressive dogs may show any combination of the following behaviors:

  • Excessive barking or lunging: Some dogs vocalize or lunge because they’re anxious or unsure. Our training programs include strategies to stop excessive barking.
  • Nipping and biting: Puppies often explore the world with their mouths. Nipping can become a dangerous habit if left unchecked. Advanced training at Natural Breed Kennels addresses nipping and puppy biting.
  • Resource guarding: Protecting food, toys or sleeping areas can lead to growling or snapping. Teaching dogs to “leave it” and “stay” helps them understand boundaries.
  • Fearful or reactive postures: Stiff bodies, raised hackles and intense staring are signs of stress. Our behavior modification program focuses on positively developing a dog’s response to stressful situations.

Aggression often has underlying causes—lack of socialization, fear, pain or inconsistent boundaries. Recognizing the triggers helps us design a plan that makes your dog feel secure. Our trainers are educated to understand canine body language and behavior, so they can intervene before problems escalate.

Our Training Philosophy: Compassion and Structure

At Natural Breed Kennels, our approach is rooted in compassion and structure. We believe that every dog is unique, so training methods must vary to meet each dog’s learning style. Rather than applying a one‑size‑fits‑all model, we tailor programs to your dog’s temperament, age and specific goals. During sessions, we use positive reinforcement and clear communication. We reward desired behaviors with treats, praise or play while gently redirecting unwanted actions. Building confidence is our goal—when dogs feel secure and understood, they are less likely to react aggressively.

Our cage‑free resort provides the ideal environment for training. Unlike traditional kennels, our facility offers private rooms and spacious play areas. Dogs spend the majority of their day outside of their suites socializing or enjoying private play sessions. Each room features smart lighting, comfortable beds and tempered glass doors. The facility has 2,800 square feet of indoor play space divided into three sections and three acres of outdoor play divided into four yards, giving dogs plenty of room to burn energy and learn to interact appropriately. Our experienced staff is trained to understand dog behavior and knows what your pet is saying, so they can guide play and prevent conflicts before they start.

Training Programs for Aggressive Dogs

Aggressive behaviors require consistency and expert guidance. We offer a range of programs designed to teach obedience while addressing the root causes of aggression.

Basic Obedience

Our Basic Training curriculum covers essential skills that every dog needs:

  • Potty and crate training: We help puppies and newly adopted dogs learn where and when to relieve themselves and introduce crate routines.
  • Core commands: Sit, stay, down, lay and come are the foundation for good manners. Teaching these commands builds trust and allows you to communicate clearly with your dog.
  • Leash manners: Proper leash walking prevents pulling and leash aggression. We show dogs how to walk calmly beside you and respond to guidance.
  • Desensitization and socialization: Dogs encounter new sights, sounds and other animals at our cage‑free resort. Structured socialization sessions build confidence and reduce fear-based aggression.
  • Guidance for owners: We provide phone support and virtual classes to answer questions and celebrate progress. Training is a partnership; we’re here to coach you as well as your dog.

Advanced Obedience and Behavior Modification

For dogs that need more intensive work, our Advanced Training curriculum expands on the basics and introduces strategies that target aggressive behaviors:

  • Advanced commands: We teach “come,” “stay” and “leave it” with distractions and at different distances. Dogs learn to respond reliably regardless of the environment.
  • Door manners and distance work: Teaching dogs to wait calmly at doors and to sit or lie down at a distance builds impulse control.
  • Stopping excessive barking, nipping and biting: Through positive reinforcement and confidence‑building exercises, we address barking, nipping and puppy biting.
  • Behavior modification: This program is designed to address bad habits and help dogs develop positive responses to stressful situations. By identifying triggers and using gradual exposure and rewards, we can reduce fear and reactivity.

Specialized Add‑ons

Some dogs thrive when given extra challenges. We offer specialized training such as off‑leash recall and scent tracking. Off‑leash training allows dogs to run freely while still responding to your recall command. Scent tracking stimulates their brains and strengthens your bond. These activities channel energy into constructive outlets, which is especially helpful for dogs that might otherwise direct their energy toward aggression.

Delivery Methods: Board & Train, Day Camp & Train and In‑Home Visits

Our programs are delivered in several formats so you can choose the one that best fits your schedule and your dog’s needs.

  • Board & Train: Your dog stays with us at our luxury resort and receives daily training sessions. Board & Train packages range from five to thirty‑five days (Pre‑K, Kindergarten, Elementary and Good Dog). Dogs benefit from an immersive environment and constant supervision, and you receive pictures and updates so you can see progress.
  • Day Camp & Train: Ideal if you want your dog to sleep at home. Drop your dog off for a day of play and training, then practice at home with the daily feedback we provide. We offer 7‑day and 14‑day options.
  • In‑Home Training: Sometimes behaviors occur primarily at home. Our trainers travel to your house and work with your family in your own environment. We offer single visit and seven visit packages, and we can cover everything from puppy basics to advanced skills.
  • Custom packages: If none of the standard options fit, we’ll design a plan specifically for your dog. Aggressive behaviors can be complex, so customization ensures we address the right triggers.

No matter which format you choose, you’ll receive individualized attention, consistent updates and continued support. Training is a partnership between our team and your family, so we keep you informed and engaged every step of the way.

The Importance of Socialization and Day Camp for Aggressive Dogs

Aggressive dogs often lack positive experiences with other dogs or people. Our dog day camp is a structured, supervised play program that helps dogs build social skills. We operate four separate outdoor play yards and three indoor play yards, allowing us to group dogs by size and temperament. A 10:1 dog‑to‑staff ratio ensures that interactions are safe and guided.

Dogs who spend time exercising and playing with other dogs lead healthier and happier lives. Our philosophy is that a tired dog is a good dog. By socializing your pet, they develop new, good behaviors and their confidence grows. Socialization helps aggressive dogs learn appropriate boundaries and reduces fear‑based reactions. We can also tailor the day camp program around your pup’s needs, providing more rest breaks or smaller play groups if your dog needs time to adjust.

Before enrolling in day camp or boarding, we conduct a required two‑hour evaluation and request proof of current vaccinations. Our goal is to maintain a safe and healthy environment for all dogs, and the evaluation allows us to ensure that your dog will do well in a cage‑free setting. Dogs should also be on flea and tick prevention; any pets with parasites will be bathed at the owner’s expense.

Preparing Your Dog for Training Success

Training aggressive dogs requires teamwork between our trainers and your family. Here are some tips to set your dog up for success:

  • Stay current on vaccinations: Puppies must be fully vaccinated before attending Pre‑K or Kindergarten programs. Up‑to‑date vaccines protect your dog and others.
  • Gather motivation: Bring your dog’s favorite treats or toys to training sessions. Rewards that your dog values make learning fun.
  • Be consistent at home: Use the same cues and boundaries we teach you. Dogs learn faster when everyone in the household communicates the same way.
  • Set realistic expectations: Lasting results require continued practice. Our programs can accomplish a lot in a short time, but aggressive behaviors often take weeks or months of reinforcement to change.
  • Stay engaged: We provide phone support and updates during board or day camp programs. Ask questions, practice homework and celebrate progress.
